THE IDEA OF SOCIAL JUSTICE IS THAT THE STATE SHOULD TREAT DIFFERENT PEOPLE UNEQUALLY IN ORDER TO MAKE THEM EQUAL.

Social Justice can be seen as panacea to many problems. It is a tool aiming to eradicate inequalities in society, ensuring economic upliftment of vulnerable and backward section of Indian society, establishment of a democratic system, mitigate sufferings and provide legal justice to those who have been oppressed at the hand of influential and powerful section of Indian society.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India has launched many schemes in the past few years for the welfare and empowerment of the marginalized and disadvantaged sections of the society.

  1. Assistance to Disabled Persons for Shopping / Fitting of Aids/appliances (ADIP Scheme) – To assist disabled people in the procurement of affordable, advanced, scientifically developed, functional, standard aids and equipment that can facilitate their physical, social and psychological recovery by reducing the impact of disabilities and enhancing their economic potential.

  2. Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana – To provide physical aids & assisted-living devices for all Senior citizens belonging to BPL category.

  3. Swachhta Udyami Yojana – it aims to promote cleanliness and also provide a livelihood to Safai Karamcharis and liberates Manual Scavengers.

  4. Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan/ Accessible India Campaign – to achieve universal accessibility for persons with disabilities.

  5. Self Employment Scheme for the Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers (SRMS) – to assist the manual scavengers for their rehabilitation in alternative professions, found during various surveys.

  6. Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana (PMAGY) – to ensure the holistic development of 1000 selected villages with more than 50 percent SC population by incorporating them into “model villages” in order to make them self-sufficient for their socio-economic growth.

  7. Deen Dayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme (DRDS) – to create an environment where equal opportunities, fairness, social justice, and empowerment are guaranteed

  • Integrated program for Old age Persons – to improve the quality of life of senior citizens by making basic services accessible.

Social justice is a dynamic tool to improve the conditions of the marginalised sections of society. If implemented in letter and spirit can help ensure human dignity and equal opportunities. It focuses more on just relations between groups within society as opposed to the justice of individual conduct or justice for individuals.
